There are few commitments longer than caring for a bird. Some species live for 30 years, others can live up to 70 years or more. When that commitment becomes too much, or when circumstances change, or when neglect and misunderstanding take their toll, there are very few places equipped to step in.
One of those places is Fallen Angels Bird Sanctuary & Rescue Facility in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.
Recently, the team from Fallen Angels Bird Sanctuary & Rescue Facility welcomed our nearby AVI Products Team for a visit. We spent time walking through their aviaries, learning about their work, and speaking to founders Craig and Donnette Fry about the realities of bird rehabilitation in South Africa. This is their story.
A bird shelter born from experience
Fallen Angels didn’t begin originally as a formal rescue, but as a deeply personal journey.
Donnette had kept birds as companions for many years. After tragically losing them in a house fire 25 years ago, birds remained close to her heart. In 2013, the couple brought home an African Grey and a pair of Ringnecks. What started as three birds slowly became something much bigger.
They began building aviaries because they do not believe birds should live confined to cages. As more birds were surrendered to them, the need became clear. There were very few facilities in KwaZulu-Natal, and even fewer in South Africa, that could offer birds a permanent home.
Today, Fallen Angels is a registered NPO providing lifetime care for abused, unwanted, pre-loved, sick, disabled, and injured birds of all species.
And very much like Donette’s journey, birds remain very close to our company’s origins, not to mention our name. Our acronym ‘AVI’ is rooted in ‘avian’, tracing back to when bird feed was initially our primary production. Birds of a feather flock together, and we are proud to support Fallen Angel’s mission and story with our own.
580 birds, 19 species, one mission
The sanctuary currently cares for approximately 580 birds across 19 different species, including African Greys, Macaws, Cockatoos, Ringnecks, Eclectus parrots, and more.
Most birds live in free-flight aviaries and are not caged unless sick or injured. The sanctuary operates with a strict no-public-entry policy to protect both birds and visitors.
Their mission is simple but significant: provide shelter, care, enrichment, veterinary attention, and permanent homes for birds that have nowhere else to go.
A closer look at bird care with Fallen Angels
What are the most common reasons birds are surrendered?
Lifestyle changes are one of the biggest factors. Birds are long-term companions. Cockatoos, Macaws, and African Greys can live well beyond 50 years. Many owners underestimate the time, attention, and noise levels involved.
During lockdown, they saw a sharp increase in large bird surrenders. Noise and attention demands became overwhelming for many households.
There are also tragic cases involving abuse, where trust must be rebuilt over months or even years.
What are some common misconceptions about keeping birds as pets?
The biggest misconception is that birds are decorative pets that belong in cages.
Birds are highly intelligent, sentient beings. They require stimulation, companionship, and mental engagement. Comparing them to a permanent seven-year-old child is not an exaggeration.
Another misconception is that all African Greys will talk. While they have the ability to mimic, not all will do so.
How important is avian nutrition in rehabilitation?
According to Craig and Donnette, providing bird nutrition is one of the most critical aspects of bird care.
Many surrendered birds arrive having lived on sunflower seed-only diets. While convenient, these diets can cause liver damage and fatty heart build-up, particularly in birds that do not fly regularly.
Transitioning birds onto a balanced diet that includes fresh fruit, vegetables, and formulated feed is often the turning point in their recovery. Especially as different bird breeds have diverse nutritional requirements that need to be met.
What changes have you seen with consistent, high-quality bird nutrition?
Since incorporating AVI Products Complete Parrot Mix into their feeding programme, Fallen Angels has observed measurable improvements.
They report:
- More vibrant feather colour
- Stronger feather follicles
- Reduced feather loss in previous “pluckers”
- Improved immune resilience
- Fewer illness-related veterinary visits
For birds that had damaged feather follicles, the moulting recovery period has been reduced noticeably.
The sanctuary now uses approximately 360kg of AVI+ bird food products per month, equating to roughly 25kg per day. The support has not only improved bird health outcomes but also reduced food preparation times significantly, allowing more time for hands-on care.

Feeding 580 birds is not simple. It requires structure, consistency, and nutritional reliability.
Rendering fresh ingredients into balanced, scientifically formulated healthy bird food ensures birds receive essential nutrients, including proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals that support immune function, feather integrity, and overall vitality.
